Local Organizations Host Candidates Forum to Discuss Pressing Economic Issues

On Thursday September 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., eight candidates for NC House and Senate will discuss economic issues relevant to residents of Asheville and Buncombe County.

The forum will be held at the Triedstone Missionary Baptist Church, at 100 Carroll Ave in downtown Asheville. Children First of Buncombe County, Working Families Win, Christians for a United Community, Baptist Ministers Union, and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance are all cosponsors of this event.

“From
our work with local people all over Western North Carolina, we have
found that economic issues such as wages, health care, jobs, child
care, and housing are more important to our citizens than any other
issues in this election. Therefore, we will focus on these specific
issues in this candidates’ forum,” said Tyrone Greenlee, Executive
Director of Christians for a United Community. The groups are working
to bring the candidates together for conversations about their
positions and to educate voters on how these candidates stand on the
issues.

The following candidates have been invited to participate:

Representative
Susan Fisher (D, Incumbent District 114), Mike Harrison (R, District
114), Doug Jones (D, District 116), Charles Thomas (R, District 116),
Representative Bruce Goforth (D, Incumbent District 115), Eric Gorny
(R, District 115), Senator Martin Nesbitt (D, Incumbent District 49),
and RL Clark (R, Senate 49). These candidates will be given the
opportunity to answer questions relating to the five topics.

This event is
open to the public and the five sponsoring groups encourage community
members to take this opportunity to educate themselves on the
candidates positions so they may be more informed come election time in
November.
