Republican Senator Thom Tillis Proud of Bipartisan Safer Communities Act
Increases access to mental health services.

The nation recently marked the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) into law—the first community safety law passed in a generation.
NC’s senior senator Thom Tillis was one of few Republicans who supported the law, and his support later earned him chastisement from the NC Republican Party.
Tillis, first elected in 2014, was considered a solid conservative when he beat incumbent Kay Hagen. Since then, unlike many in his party, he has shown some independence from the party line, although he is still a reliable vote for most GOP initiatives in the Senate.
The Safer Communities Act increases access to mental health services and is designed to reduce violence and improve safety, security, and mental health resources at public schools.
Tillis said in a statement, “I was proud to have been one of the lead senators who negotiated, wrote, and passed this historic bipartisan bill into law. It was a rare example of finding a compromise on one of the most contentious political issues in our country.
I’m even prouder that we’re already seeing results as the law is being implemented, with its goals being to reduce violence, increase access to mental health care, and improve safety, security, and mental health resources at schools across North Carolina.”
