Creative Writing Awards for Young Writers
Michelle Obama has always been passionate about helping young people discover the power of telling their own stories.
Penguin Random House and We Need Diverse Books have launched the Michelle Obama Award for Memoir, a new creative writing award focused on memoir writing for public high school students.
In recognition of Michelle Obama’s long-standing commitment to mentorship and education, as well as her inspiring leadership in encouraging young people to discover the power of telling their own stories, this award grants a college scholarship of $10,000 to one young, promising writer. In addition, honorable mentions receive “creativity kits,” which include a selection of Penguin Random House titles and writing resources.
If you are a current high school senior who attends public school in the United States and are planning to attend college—either a two-year or four-year institution—you are eligible to apply.
Submit one original literary composition in English in one of the following genres of poetry, spoken word, fiction/drama, or personal essay/memoir.
Young writers are our future—their voices and stories matter!
