Saturday, January 14

31st Annual Prayer Breakfast – 8:30 a.m.

The Prayer Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Grand
Ballroom of the historic Grove Park Inn & Resort at 290 Macon
Avenue. Guest speaker Dr. Boyce Watkins will be joined by the Unity
& Fellowship Choir and other distinguished guests. Adult tickets for
the breakfast are $25 in advance, $30 after December 31 and at the
door. Student tickets (under 13) are $15; patron tickets are $35. Sponsored by MLK Assoc.

Teen Week Book Share – 9:30-11:00 a.m.

Congregation Beth HaTephila will participate in Teen
Week of the Martin Luther King Celebrations hosted by the YWCA Preschool
Program, when readers from Asheville Middle School 8th grade will read
to preschoolers, who will be able to take books home with them.

Thursday, January 12

Youth Celebration – 4:00 p.m.

Ceremonies honoring Dr. King begin with the annual Youth
Celebration and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, January 12 at 4 p.m. at
Lipinsky Auditorium on the campus of UNC Asheville. The program
recognizes students nominated for their work in furthering the spirit
and philosophy of Dr. King, culminating in the presentation of the
Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Award to a young person whose work best
exemplifies his legacy. Sponsored by MLK Assoc.

Monday, January 16

Peace Walk & Rally – 11:30 a.m.

On Monday, January 16, the annual Peace Walk and rally will
begin at noon (meet at 11:30 a.m.), at St. James AME Church at the
corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Hildebrand Street. Marchers
will walk to the City-County Plaza area of Pack Square Park for a
program of music and speeches. Participants are asked to bring canned
food or other nonperishable food items for Manna Food Bank, which can be
dropped off near the church before the march begins. Sponsored by MLK Assoc.

Monday, January 16

Candlelight Service – 6:00 p.m.

A candle-lighting ceremony will remember the less fortunate
and remind us of the need to continue working to combat injustice. The
Candlelight Service will be held at 6 p.m. at Nazareth First Baptist
Church at 146 Pine Street, with music by the Miller-Reynolds Chorale,
Trevor Chavis, Director. The 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Award will be
formally presented to an area resident whose work reflects and furthers
Dr. King’s legacy. Sponsored by MLK Assoc.
