New Covid-19 Variant on the Rise

NB.1.8.1 is a variation of the JN.1 Covid variant, which is from the Omicron family.

Everyone over the age of six months is advised to get the 2024-25 Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine.

NB.1.8.1 has been named a “variant under monitoring” by the World Health Organization (WHO), meaning the agency is keeping a close eye on it.

It also has “increasing proportions globally,” according to the WHO. The variant has shown up in 22 countries so far and seems to be spreading quickly.

“This particular variant is concerning simply because of the rapid spread,” says Perry N. Halkitis, PhD, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health. “However, it remains to be seen how widespread this variant would be given the immunity that exists in the other parts of the world.”

As the new Covid-19 variant continues to spread, health experts are warning that its symptoms can closely resemble those of allergies and the common summer cold.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) spotted the NB.1.8.1 through its airport screening program in May. It has been traced to a large surge in China. More than 40,000 positive tests were reported by the CDC in May. LP.8.1 made up 70% of reported Covid-19 cases in the US between April 26 and May 10, as reported by the CDC.

Symptoms of the variant include fever, trouble breathing, a new loss of taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, several symptoms overlap with the common summer cold, such as a sore throat, congestion or a runny nose, fatigue, and muscle and body aches.

Symptoms associated with the NB.1.8.1 variant can appear two to 14 days after exposure and range from mild to severe. A chronic cough is a common symptom.

Currently approved Covid-19 vaccines are expected to remain effective against the NB.1.8.1 variant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises everyone over the age of six months to get the 2024-25 Covid-19 vaccine, specifically the 2024-25 Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine.

To reduce your risk:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Wear a mask and stay home when you’re feeling sick
  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow or tissue

A Covid-19 test is the only way to confirm the virus’s presence, and knowing is crucial because antivirals like Paxlovid can prevent severe illness in at-risk individuals. Existing immunity from vaccines or prior infections should provide some protection against NB.1.8.1.
