Feel better, lose weight, lower your numbers.

Diabetes Wellness & Prevention (DWP) at the YWCA empowers people with or at risk of Type-2 Diabetes with knowledge, skills, and confidence to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Participants feel better, lose weight, lower their numbers, and have even been able to eliminate prescriptions.

Weekly support groups are led by health educators from YWCA and Western North Carolina Community Health Services (WNCCHS), and supported by peer mentors. Groups discuss topics such as blood sugar monitoring; making healthy food choices; benefits of regular physical activity, and stress management. Content presented combines two nationally recognized evidence-based curriculums, and participants also learn from each other’s personal experiences.

Participants who commit to the full 7-½ months of DWP receive discounted membership to YWCA’s Fitness Center and Pool; fitness coaching; pharmacist consultations; Community Dinners; and a cash gift card upon completion. The next session begins in April and offers afternoon and evening group sessions.
