Disabled American Veterans is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping veterans lead high-quality lives with dignity and respect.

Its mission statement is “to ensure that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them, fight for the interests of America’s injured heroes on Capitol Hill, and educate the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.”

Veterans often face service-connected medical problems but don’t consider themselves disabled, at least in spirit; most continue to live their lives to the best of their ability. Whatever hardships they face, DAV tries to step in and help. The Buncombe County chapter helps individual veterans access their federal benefits such as claims for compensation, and ensuring they receive the proper medical care.

DAV provides coffee, toiletries, and crafts kits to patients housed at the Charles George VA medical center in Oteen, and helps raise funds for the Veterans Transportation Network Program, which bring veterans with no means of transportation to their medical appointments at the Charles George center. Other activities include offering a scholarship fund for veterans, reaching out to veterans at public and private events, and providing homeless vets with warm clothing, toiletries, waterproof tarps, and tube tents to be used as shelter.

Veterans or their family members who need assistance accessing the range of free benefits available are encouraged to contact the Buncombe County DAV Chapter #2. To contact the chapter or make a donation, call or text (828) 367-5591, or email [email protected] for more information.

Buncombe County DAV Chapter #2 meets on the first Tuesday of every month 7-8 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room in the basement (across from the cafeteria) at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
