North Carolina Quitline Offers Free Help

Make Your Mother’s Day Tobacco-Free
One North Carolina mother thinks quitting tobacco for good is a great way to honor or remember your mother this Mother’s Day.
Terrie Hall, 52, of Lexington, shared her story of surviving smoking-related cancer in two television ads aired by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The ads are part of the Tips from Former Smokers Campaign, which helped many tobacco users around the country quit in 2012.
Hall said she was thrilled to learn that QuitlineNC, N.C.’s telephone and online tobacco cessation support service, is offering free nicotine replacement therapy this year.
“Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do for your family,” Hall said. “As a mother and a grandmother, I wish I had never started. But now I can help by encouraging others to never smoke, or to quit as soon as they can.”
QuitlineNC has free nicotine replacement therapy patches, gum, and lozenges to help those who sign up to quit, while supplies last.
“Medication paired with the coaching offered by QuitlineNC can double the success of quitting for good for tobacco users who want to quit, whether it’s the first or the tenth time they have tried,” said Gibbie Harris, Buncombe County Health Director. “Promise yourself to be around to celebrate many more Mother’s Days by quitting today. This free offer could make all the difference.”
North Carolinians ready to quit smoking may call QuitlineNC at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or visit www.quitlinenc.com to sign up for support to quit, including the over-the-counter medication. QuitlineNC telephone service is offered in English and Spanish, with translation services available for other languages.
N.C. tobacco users can receive a limited supply of free nicotine replacement therapy after they enroll with QuitlineNC for a four-call program. Each enrollee will develop a personalized quit plan with a quit coach. The supply of medication available to each individual varies, depending on insurance coverage, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
