Black Women Make History at US Gymnastics Championships

For the first time, Black women swept the podium at the U.S. Gymnastic Championships in the senior all-around competition held in Tampa, Florida in August.

Congratulations to Konnor McClain, 17; Shilese Jones, 20; and Jordan Chiles, 21. These young gymnasts are following in the footsteps of some of our greatest Black gynmasts, including Suni Lee, Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas.

17-year-old Konnor McClain earned the US all-around gymnastics title and a gold medal at the national championships. Her win is an amazing comeback after recovering from a stress fracture in both shins, a concussion, and the flu just two weeks ago.

“It’s so unreal,” McClain said after her brilliant two-day performance. “I’m still in shock a little bit.”

McClain won the gold medal on the balance beam and the top all-around rank with a score of 112.750 in her first senior national competition. Jones followed closely with a second-place overall score of 112.000 and Chiles placed third with a score of 111.900.
