Skyview Golf Association Hosts 2021 Tournament

The Skyview Golf Association was founded and incorporated in 1960 as a not-for-profit organization in an effort to promote golf competition among African American golfers throughout the United States.

The very first Skyview Tournament was an all-African American event with 50 participants. The next year integration took place when Dr. Robert McDuffie, a local pediatrician, and Walt Gossett, both Caucasian, played. This opened the door for all people to participate. Since that first tournament that only had 50 people, the tournament has grown consistently each year. Today, Skyview is one of the largest tournaments in the Southeast.

The tournament is hosted at the Asheville Municipal Golf Course, “Muni” as it locally referred to, designed by world-famous golf course designer Donald Ross. Numerous nationally known African American celebrities and golf professionals have participated in the Skyview Open, such as Lee Elder, Jim Dent, Jim and Chuck Thorpe, John Brooks Dendy, Harold Varner III, and even World Boxing Champion Joe Louis.

The tournament will be held July 13-15, 2021 at the Asheville Municipal Golf Course, 229 Fairview Drive, Asheville, NC, 28803. Tee time for Amateurs is 8 a.m. Tee time for Pros is 2 p.m.

This year’s tournament benefits the Billy E. P. Gardenhight Scholarship and Elderly Programs.

Early registration fee is $490 for the Professional division and $190 for the Amateur division. Cut-off for early registration is July 12, 2021 at 12 noon. Day-of-tournament entry fee is $525 for Pros and $215 for Amateurs. Cancellation (refund) is only available if there are federal, state, and local public policy changes due to Covid-19.

The tournament is open to the first 60 Pros/Senior Pros and the first 110 Amateurs.
