76th Annual City of Asheville Open Tennis Championships

Asheville, NC – The 76th Annual City of Asheville Open Tennis Championships will be July 5-22 at the Aston Park Tennis Center in Asheville highlighted by both the Junior and Adult Tournaments, a special day with a tennis star and dedication of a tennis court in honor of a local tennis legend.

The Junior Tournament will be July 5-8 with a first-match loser consolation format. The entry fee is $25 for singles, and $10 per person for doubles. Entry deadline is Friday, June 29 at 5:00 p.m.


The Adult
Tournament will be July 13-22 highlighted by the Men’s and Women’s Open
Singles Finals on July 22. National Tennis Rating Program divisions
will be July 13-15, and the adult and senior divisions (60-90) will
begin on July 16. Entry fee is $35 for singles, and $20 per person for
doubles. Entry deadline is Monday, July 9 at 5:00 p.m.
Luke Jensen, tennis pro and ESPN tennis analyst will make a special
guest appearance during the City Open on July 16. The day with “Dual
Hand Luke” kicks off at noon with a Lunch with Luke for middle and high
school tennis players free of charge, followed by an afternoon of
tennis clinics led by Jensen. The youth tennis clinic is $10, and the
adult tennis clinic $15.

As part of Luke Jensen Day, a tennis court will be named in dedication
to local tennis legend Dave Carey. The 93 year old North Carolina
Tennis Hall of Fame Member is a five-time United States Tennis
Association National Champion in singles, a six-time USTA National
Champion in doubles, and has been ranked number one in the world in his
age group. Cary has won his age division in singles 11 times at the
Asheville City Open and will return this year to defend his title in
the 90’s age division.

The City Open is designated as an official 200-Point Tournament of the
Southern Tennis Association, assuring Asheville a strong field with
high finishers receiving additional points toward their United States
Tennis Association rankings.

The total cash purse of $10,000 is sponsored by the Western North
Carolina Tennis Association, Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Asheville,
Arby’s -The Winning Team and Deal Motor Cars.

In addition to a
cash prize, the names of the winners of the Men’s and Women’s Open will
be engraved on the Silver Challenge Bowls. Junior tournament winners
will receive engraved silver bowls. The winner and runner up of the
Junior Boys 18 Singles will have his name engraved on the Mabel Knight
Morgan Challenge Bowl, which must be won twice to retire. The winner
and runner up of the Junior Girls 18 Singles will have her name
engraved on the Larry Vaughn Memorial Challenge Bowl. Tournament entry
