Hill Street Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Keith A. Ogden, celebrated its annual appreciation program recently, and used the occasion to honor long-time former pastor Dr. Nilous Avery and his wife, First Lady Mrs. Christine Avery. The Reverend Dr. C.R. Edwards, a lifelong friend and seminary classmate of Dr Avery, was the guest speaker, offering a profound and powerful message on the subject “A Fool-Proof Ministry.”
During
the celebration the church announced that its new educational building
will be called the “Dr Nilous M. Avery Multi-Purpose Building.” Dr.
Avery served the church and the wider Asheville community for more than
half a century, from 1951 until his retirement in 2002. The church also
plans to rename its well-established daycare center for Mrs. Avery.
The
“Christine Avery Daycare Center” will honor the pastor’s first lady,
who founded the Hill Street Baptist Daycare center over 45 years ago.
