Farewell to an Outstanding Citizen: Dr. Carl Mumpwer

Dr. Mumpower was sometimes called “Dr. No” by those who were irritated by his frequent opposition to initiatives proposed by his colleagues, or who considered that opposition reflexive rather than reflective.

We ourselves found it often frustrating, sometimes infuriating, but always principled, and we admire and respect him for his willingness to stand his ground – even when we disagreed with him, as we often did. Dr. Mumpower made clear his belief in a citizen legislature, to the point that he refused to ask for or expend money on his reelection campaign.

“People know what I stand for,” he said on more than one occasion, and
he proclaimed himself perfectly content to lose his seat if what he
stood for was not what the majority of voters – the people – were
looking for. This year, it was not… but his attitude is as close as can
be to what the founding fathers envisioned for a government of, by, and
for the people, and we applaud him for it.

Thank you for your dedicated service, Dr. Mumpower, and your good citizenship.
