Schedule of Local Events Commemorating the Negro Baseball Leagues

Friday, March 14

3:00 to 4:30 p.m. The Asheville Symphony will offer the first of two lectures from at the Reuter Center on the campus of UNC Asheville. Dick Kowal of WCQS will talk with the composer of Pastime, Richard Danielpour, who will be joining the Symphony during the weekend.

Daniel Meyer, Music Director and Conductor will interview soloist Gregg Baker, who has sung major musical works around the world to great acclaim — Baker will also be present at this event. Maestro Meyer will give a second, abridged lecture on Saturday, March 15 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on the works being performed that evening, including Pastime. Both events are free and open to the public.

 

Saturday, March 15

3:00
p.m. at the YMI Community Center – “The Blacks and Whites of Baseball”
– A Combination of Poetry and Dance. Shine Entertainment, under the
direction of Letita Bromell and Anthony Alexander will perform on
Saturday, March 15 at 3:00 p.m. at the YMI Community Center at the
corner of Eagle and Market Street in downtown Asheville. Shine
Entertainment, presented by the W.C. Reid Center will perform.

Saturday, March 15

8:00
p.m. The week’s finale will be the Asheville Symphony Orchestra
Masterworks concert at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in the Asheville Civic
Center in downtown Asheville. The title of the concert is Spring
Training.

The
youth poetry contest winners will be recognized on stage at the concert
and their poems will be included in the symphony program for the
evening. Tickets, ranging from $17 to $49, are still available for the
Asheville Symphony concert and can be obtained by calling the symphony
office at (828) 254-7046

Sunday, March 16

7:00
p.m. Asheville Playback Theatre will host an improvisational evening at
NC Stage Company at 15 Stage Lane in Downtown Asheville. The topic for
the evening is “Let’s Talk About Race – Stories of Race and Privilege.”
