Baby Formula Becoming Hard to Find

One of the most important products for baby is in short supply.

Baby formula is increasingly out of stock on retailers’ shelves across the country.

Prices have also spiked, with the average cost of the most popular baby formula products up as much as 18% over the past 12 months. In January, Enfamil, a leading baby formula brand, said it was coping with an unprecedented 18% surge in demand for the baby formula nationwide. Retailers like Walgreens are limiting how much consumers can purchase at one time, citing an increase in demand and various supplier issues.

A new report from Datasembly found that 30% of baby formula is sold out nationwide. The group says supply chain shortages, recalls, and inflation all contributed to the problem. If you are a parent and must switch baby formulas, it is best to consult your child’s pediatrician for guidance.

In 24 US states, 30% of formula was out of stock as of mid-March, while other states were seeing even more severe shortages. In Minnesota, 54% of baby formula products were out of stock that same time. Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, North and South Dakota, Rhode Island, and Texas are also grappling with shortages of at least 40%. For the time being, parents hope this shortage ends sooner rather than later.

Avoid Hoarding

To help ease the impact of shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises buying no more than a 10-day to 2-week supply of formula. If you are completely out of formula, call your pediatrician. They may have extra cans that can get you through a pinch. They can also advise you on what formula may work as a substitute if you can’t find the one you’re looking for.

Another resource is to call your local government WIC office.
