Woman Burglarized Homes During Funerals

Westchester County, NY – Latonia Shelecia Stewart, 26, was recently arraigned on numerous charges connected to six different break-ins that were reported in Westchester County between fall of 2017 and spring of 2018.

The Bronx, New York, resident is accused of preying on the bereaved by looking up the obituaries of area residents and burglarizing their homes while their families attend funerals. She would allegedly steal jewelry and other personal items from the residences, which were later found ransacked by families returning home.

On May 1, 2018, police rolled up on Stewart and caught her in the act, her indictment says. She allegedly had the particular family’s obituary on her cellphone, and her baby was in the back seat of her car.

The young woman was indicted on 22 counts of burglary, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, petty larceny, criminal mischief, possession of burglar’s tools.
