C-SPAN Explores Court Case with Ties to Asheville, NC
C-SPAN will explore a court case with ties to Asheville, North Carolina on Monday, May 7, 2018 at 9pm ET.
This LIVE program will delve into Gregg v. Georgia, and the story of Troy Leon Gregg, a convicted armed robber and murderer from Asheville, NC, who challenged his death sentence; four other capital punishment cases were considered by the court as well. The Supreme Court ruled against him in Gregg v. Georgia, but established stricter guidelines for states wishing to impose the death penalty. The decision also fine-tuned the court’s interpretation of the 8th and 14th Amendments.
Guests on the show include:
Carol Steiker, one of the nation’s top capital punishment legal scholars and a professor at Harvard Law School. She’s a former clerk of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, has argued against the death penalty in a number of cases before the Court, and is the co-author of “Courting Death: The Supreme Court and Capital Punishment.”
Kent Scheidegger, the legal director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, a Sacramento, California-based organization advocating in favor of capital punishment and a more swift-moving criminal justice system. He has written numerous briefs in death penalty cases before the Supreme Court.
