The Southern Poverty Law Center has tracked hate groups for decades.

They count 784 “active hate groups” across the U.S., and more than a third of them—288—are based in the eleven states of the former Confederacy.

Based on population, the worst states are Mississippi, with one group for every 136,000 residents, and Arkansas, with one per 148,000. Texas has the lowest ratio, at one hate group for every 750,000 people, while North Carolina has one per 414,000.
