Asheville hasn’t seen a passenger train in almost 50 years… but that may soon change.
Amtrak has plans for an Asheville–Salisbury route by 2034, with stops in Black Mountain, Old Fort, Marion, Morganton, Hickory, and Statesville. From there, connections to Charlotte, Raleigh, DC, New York, and even Wilmington could make Asheville part of the national rail network once again.
With Biltmore Village emerging as a potential station location—especially after Hurricane Helene opened new possibilities along the tracks—the timing feels right.
Asheville was transformed by the railroad in 1880. Could 2034 be the year it happens again, or sooner?
