Another Disturbing Incident
Two Buncombe County high schools, Clyde A. Erwin in Leicester and A.C. Reynolds in Fairview, played football on October 7, 2022.
During the game (probably at halftime), Erwin had a “Veterans Color Guard” on the field. Amongst them was a student dressed in a uniform which resembled that of a Confederate soldier. Not surprisingly, African Americans were upset about this blatant display of insensitivity and symbolic racism.
It’s also important to note that there are no people of color on the Buncombe County School Board, and very few (if any) Black educators employed with BCS. As a result, there is almost no one to raise a red flag about such symbolism and its effects on minority students. In other words, those who are prejudiced can pretty much do what they want.
