Born in Argentina, Mónica Murillo brought with her a passion for education, service, and community when she moved to the United States at age 29.
Today, she is a proud mother of two and grandmother of two, and a respected advocate for Latino families in western North Carolina. In Argentina, Murillo earned credentials as both a teacher and a graphic designer—two fields that reflect her lifelong dedication to learning, communication, and creativity.
Murillo has devoted her professional life to strengthening connections between families and essential services. She works as a Spanish interpreter for Asheville City Schools, helping ensure that Latino families can communicate clearly and confidently with educators and school administrators. Through this role, she supports parents and students in navigating the school system and encourages greater engagement in their children’s education.
Her work extends deeply into the community through UNETE, a local nonprofit organization focused on empowering Latino residents. As a Community Health Worker, Murillo helps families access health care services and critical community resources. She is actively involved in the Middle School FAROS program, where she works closely with students and their families to promote leadership, academic engagement and positive youth development.
Murillo also serves as an interpreter for the ABCCM Medical Clinic, helping Spanish-speaking patients receive the care and in-formation they need.
As part of her outreach with UNETE, Murillo also serves as a vital liaison between Safe Kids of Western North Carolina and the Latino community. Through this partnership, she helps families obtain car seats and receive important safety education designed to protect children and prevent injuries.
In addition, Murillo is a certified doula with Sisters Caring 4 Sisters, where she provides compassionate, holistic support to Spanish-speaking families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. For Murillo, walking alongside mothers during one of the most important moments of their lives is both an honor and a responsibility—one she approaches with deep care, cultural understanding, and professionalism.
Through her many roles, Mónica Murillo continues to uplift families, strengthen community connections and serve as a trusted bridge between cultures, languages, and vital services.
