Edith Hutchison Darity’s lifelong commitment continues to strengthen Brevard, North Carolina’s community and cultural legacy.
Leadership, legacy, and love for community define the spirit of every thriving town. In many places, that spirit is nurtured by individuals whose steady dedication strengthens the bonds between neighbors and generations. Their leadership is not simply about programs or policies: it is about people, connection, and the lasting impact of service.
The Urban News is honored to recognize a leader whose commitment to the local community center reflects a lifelong dedication to service, unity, and intergenerational empowerment.
Brevard native Edith Hutchison Darity, a former Rosenwald and Ninth Avenue student, was raised with strong values of faith, resilience, and collective responsibility. She learned early that community is built, not inherited.
A local visionary, wife, mother, and friend, Edith Darity understands the power of working together. Surrounded by elders who shared wisdom and neighbors who showed care, she witnessed firsthand how safe spaces can shape lives.
Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, historians, and faithful servants to the community, Darity reflects the values she experienced as a child. One of her favorite sayings—“Without a vision, the people perish”—became a guiding principle, inspiring her to invest time, heart, and vision into the growth and sustainability of the Mary C. Jenkins Community and Cultural Center.
Sacred Ground
To many residents, the community center is simply a building. To Darity, it is sacred ground.
Within its walls, culture is celebrated, voices are uplifted, and dreams are nurtured. The center stands as a symbol of resilience and pride, particularly within the African American community, where such spaces have historically served as pillars of empowerment and self-determination.
Sustaining that legacy requires honoring those who came before while empowering the next generation of leaders. It calls for intentional mentorship, strong community partnerships, and a willingness to adapt while remaining grounded in core values.
Darity encourages residents of all generations to play a role in strengthening the community.
She urges elders to continue sharing their wisdom, reminding them that their experiences are a treasure. She encourages young people to step forward with confidence, knowing that their voices carry power and promise. And she reminds the broader community that unity is built each day through love, service, and mutual respect.
