The Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville presents world-renowned singer and social activist David LaMotte.

David LaMotte’s TEDx talk, “Why Heroes Don’t Change the World,” will be presented at the Sunday, December 15, 2024 monthly platform meeting of the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville from 2:30 until 4 p.m. The hybrid meeting will be held at 227 Edgewood Rd. in Asheville, NC, with participants viewing the TEDx video in person or online. The presentation will be followed by a live Zoom discussion with LaMotte. All are welcome.

This past March, LaMotte, a native of Black Mountain, spoke at TEDx Asheville, focusing on the downside of hero narratives and how stories designed to inspire people can have the opposite effect. His message reminds us that we don’t have to be extraordinary to make change—we just have to work together. In his book, You Are Changing the World, Whether You Like It or Not, LaMotte also challenges some of our deeply held ideas about how societal changes happen and what our own roles in those changes can and should be.

LaMotte, a songwriter, speaker, and author, has performed over 3,500 concerts in all fifty states and five continents. In addition to his 13 full-length CDs, he has addressed the PC (USA) Mission to the United Nations, keynoted peace conferences in India, Australia, Germany, and at the Scottish Parliament, and delivered the baccalaureate address for 2016 graduates of Columbia University Seminary.

The Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville endeavors to nurture the capacity and responsibility of human beings to act in their personal relationships and in the larger community to help create a better world. We are inspired by the ideal of working to create a more humane society, recognizing each person’s worth and dignity, and helping to bring out the best in them. We are a member of the American Ethical Union and an affiliate of the American Humanist Association. We join together to assist each other in developing ethical ideas and ideals, to celebrate life’s joys, support each other through life’s crises, and to cultivate ethical behavior in our community.
