26-year-old Luigi Mangione shot and killed Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of the American health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, on December 4, 2024.

Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 280 miles west of New York City.

When police arrested Mangione, they found a handwritten document about the American healthcare system along with what appeared to be the weapon used in the shooting, a 3D-printed gun.

The manifesto characterized healthcare executives as parasites who “had it coming” and criticized the U.S. healthcare system, noting that, despite it being the most expensive in the world, America ranks roughly 42nd in life expectancy. It specifically mentioned UnitedHealth’s market capitalization, describing it as one of the largest U.S. companies, behind only Apple, Google, and Walmart.

Mangione also argued that, while many individuals had illuminated the corruption and greed within the American healthcare system decades ago, the problems have continued to persist. He wrote that it was “not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play,” concluding by describing himself as “the first to face it with such brutal honesty.”

“To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” Mangione wrote.

“This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience. The spiral notebook, if present, has some straggling notes and To Do lists that illuminate the gist of it. My tech is pretty locked down because I work in engineering so probably not much info there,” he wrote.

“I do apologize for any strife of traumas but it had to be done,” Mangione wrote. “Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.
