Council on Aging Senior Dining and Wellness Programs
These events are offered to older adults, age 60+, who are registered with the Council on Aging of Buncombe County Senior Dining and Wellness Program. While there is no charge to participate, individuals are given the opportunity to expand services through consumer contributions.
Senior Congregate Dining at the Grove Street Community Center – Monday – Friday, 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This program offers a variety of educational guest speakers, a nutritious lunch, and more. For more information, please call (828) 350-2062. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.
Senior Dining and Wellness at the Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center – Wednesday – Friday, 12-2 p.m. Eligible adults can enjoy nutritious hot lunches from Moose Café along with weekly fresh produce in a fun, safe, and social setting. Monthly Activities
A Matter of Balance – Mondays, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., through August 28. Designed to help older adults reduce their fear of falling and increase activity levels. Beginner Full Body Workout – Thursdays, July 27, August 10, and August 24 from 6-8 p.m. Come join us for a good workout. Free. Burton Street Community Center, 134 Burton Street.

Black Alliance Health Fair – Saturday, July 29 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Join the Shiloh Community Association for a health fair catering to all age groups. The fair will offer a wide array of educational information, health vendors, and more. Fee based on activity. Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, 121 Shiloh Road.
Burton Street Senior Elite Club – Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Fun activities, planned trips, movie days, chair exercise classes, fellowship days, game days, and special meals prepared by different seniors from the group. Burton Street Community Center, 134 Burton Street.
Contemporary Line Dancing/Beginner – Held on Thursdays through August 31 from 12-12:45 p.m. Come for this fun filled drop-in class. Try it once and you will be hooked. Free. Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Avenue.
Cribbage In The Park – Tuesdays, July 11 and August 8 from 5-7 p.m. Love to play Cribbage? Meet others who love to play! Light refreshments will be provided. Free. West Asheville Park, 198 Vermont Ave.
Dinner & Bingo Night – Fridays, July 21 and August 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. Join us for a special dinner with delicious food and stay for a few rounds of Bingo. Cost: $3 per adult, free for those 12 years old and under. Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Southside Community Center, 285 Livingston Street.
Foot Care and Health Education Program – Thursday, July 27, 1-4 p.m. Services are available to all with a focus on older adults. Foot care provided by board certified, MemoryCare geriatrician Dr. David Johnson. There is no cost for this service and no appointment is needed. Services include toenail trimming, filing calluses, checking for common medical problems that impact mobility, referrals to community services, and baseline cognitive assessments. Functional Strength – Tuesdays through August 29 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Improve overall strength through stretching, beginners level strength positions, and movements for flexibility and muscle development. Golden Swimmers – Friday, August 4 from 2-4 p.m. Grab your bathing suit, water bottle, sunscreen, and a towel, and meet us at Recreation Park Pool for a day of swimming. This event is open to anyone age 50 and older. Register at least 48 hours before the event at avlrec.gov. Transportation available; seats are limited. Health Education Leading to Prevention (HELP) Program – Held on the third and fourth Wednesdays, 12-1 p.m. In partnership with Shiloh Community Association, IFPHA, and Avery Health Education & Consulting LLC led by Kathey Avery, these classes focus on the self-management of chronic disease and diabetes as well as maintaining a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. Old School Line Dancing – Held on Thursdays, through August 31 from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Bring back those old school dances you remember and mix in some new ones. This program features instructor-led dances with video backup. Free. Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Avenue.
Power Hour Exercise – Held on Tuesdays from 10-11 a.m. Come build some power with our gentle chair exercises that are fun and upbeat. All are welcome. Free. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.
Rainbow Inspirations – Held virtually on the first Wednesday of the month, 12-12:30 p.m. Hear their Story. Learn Their Journey. Be Inspired. A series of spotlights on our LGBTQ community leaders and influencers. Celebrate the strength of our LGBTQ+ elder community. This free, monthly event is part of Blue Ridge Pride’s Generation Plus. Seniors In The Park – Thursdays, July 27 and August 17 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bring anything to drink out of (NOT a cup) and join us for a picnic in a picturesque Asheville Park. Senior Tripsters – Friday, August 11 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. On the first Friday of the month, seniors will take a monthly trip to the destination of their choice. Fee depends on the trip. Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, 121 Shiloh Road.

Supermarket – Friday, August 11 from 12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Buncombe County’s Community Engagement Supermarket offers a variety of free produce, canned goods, produce, and more. This program is free and offered every 2nd Friday of the month from 12-1:30 p.m. There is no registration required. All goods are on a first-come, first-served basis. Free. Tai Chi – Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-2 p.m. Take part in meditative movements while understanding the ancient Chinese discipline known as Tai Chi. Free. Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, 121 Shiloh Road.
