Special Events

Pop Up Market – Saturday, August 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Deal or No Deal! Community Pop Up Market is for all who would like to sell their best for less. Whether it’s gently worn clothes, sweets and treats, or handmade crafts or pottery, this event is for you. Tables are $5 to sell your goods. Register online at avl.REC.com. Registration will close 48 hours before the event. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Fish Fry – Friday, August 25 from 3-5 p.m. The Grease is Poppn’ and the fish is frying. Cost: $5. Register online at avl.REC.com or in-person. Registration closes 48 hours before the event. The fish drops at 3 p.m. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Council on Aging Senior Dining and Wellness Programs

These events are offered to older adults, age 60+, who are registered with the Council on Aging of Buncombe County Senior Dining and Wellness Program. While there is no charge to participate, individuals are given the opportunity to expand services through consumer contributions.

Senior Congregate Dining at the Grove Street Community Center – Monday – Friday, 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This program offers a variety of educational guest speakers, a nutritious lunch, and more. For more information, please call (828) 350-2062. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Senior Dining and Wellness at the Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center – Wednesday – Friday, 12-2 p.m. Eligible adults can enjoy nutritious hot lunches from Moose Café along with weekly fresh produce in a fun, safe, and social setting. Monthly Activities

A Matter of Balance – Mondays until August 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Designed to help older adults reduce their fear of falling, this program benefits older adults who are concerned about falls, have sustained falls in the past, restrict activities because of concerns about falling. For those interested in improving flexibility, balance, and strength, and are aged 60 and older, community-dwelling, and able to problem solve. Beginner Full Body Workout – Thursday, August 24 from 6-8 p.m. Come join us for a good workout. Free. Burton Street Community Center, 134 Burton Street.

Bid Whist – Mondays until August 28 from 5:30-8 p.m. Adults will enjoy the unique card game, Bid Whist. Light refreshments will be served. Free. Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Avenue.

Contemporary Line Dancing/Beginner – Thursdays until August 31 from 12-12:45 p.m. Fun filled drop-in class. Try it once and you will be hooked. Free. Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Avenue.

Dinner & Bingo Night – Friday, August 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. Join us for a special dinner with delicious food and stay for a few rounds of Bingo. $3 per adult; free for children under 12 years old. Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Southside Community Center, 285 Livingston Street.

Family Friday Movie Nights – Fridays from 6-8 p.m. Family friendly blockbusters screened in the auditorium. Fresh popcorn, snacks, and drinks will be available. All ages welcomed. Free. Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Southside Community Center, 285 Livingston Street.

Foot Care and Health Education Program – Thursday, August 24 from 1-4 p.m. Free clinic with educational materials about healthy aging, caregiving and more. Services are available to all with a focus on older adults. Foot care provided by Dr. David Johnson. Services include toenail trimming, filing calluses, checking for common medical problems that impact mobility, referrals to community services, and baseline cognitive assessments. Functional Strength – Tuesdays until August 29 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Improve overall strength through stretching, beginners level strength positions, and movements for flexibility and muscle development. Grove Street Card Sharks – Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m. A variety of games such as Bid Whist, Spades, Tunk, and more. Bring a partner and join in on the fun! Free. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Health Education Leading to Prevention (HELP) Program – Held on the third and fourth Wednesdays, 12-1 p.m. Led by Kathey Avery, these classes focus on the self-management of chronic disease and diabetes as well as maintaining a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. No pre-registration required. Free. Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, 121 Shiloh Road.

Old School Line Dancing – Thursdays through August 31 from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Enjoy those old school dances and mix in some new ones. Instructor lead dances with video backup. Free. Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Avenue.

Power Hour Exercise – Tuesdays, 10-11 am. Gentle based chair exercises that are fun and upbeat. All are welcome. Free. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Rainbow Inspirations – Held virtually on the first Wednesday of the month, 12-12:30 p.m. Hear their Story. Learn Their Journey. Be Inspired. A series of spotlights on our LGBTQ community leaders and influencers. Celebrate the strength of our LGBTQ+ elder community. This free, monthly event is part of Blue Ridge Pride’s Generation Plus. Scrabble Play – Sundays through August 27 from 12:30-4:45 p.m. Put on your thinking caps and come work your brain with our adult Scrabble Program. Free. Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Avenue.

Seniors in the Park – Thursday, August 17 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Join us for a beautiful picnic in Carrier Park, 220 Amboy Road. Enjoy music, crafts, games, dancing, and more! Registration required. Lunch will be catered. Free.

Senior Tripsters – Friday, September 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the 1st Friday of the month, seniors take a monthly trip. Fee depends on the trip. Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, 121 Shiloh Road.

Social Seniors – Held Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Grove Street Community Center offers a variety of activities that include socializing and meeting new people, table games, trivia, cornhole, crafts, and a monthly trip. Free. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Square Dancing – Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. Circle 8 Square Dancing is a group that meets every Tuesday. Come out and meet some new people and have a good time square dancing. Free. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Supermarket – Friday, September 8 from 12-1:30 p.m. This Community Engagement Supermarket offers a variety of free produce, canned goods, produce, and more. No registration required. All goods are on a first-come, first-served basis. Free. Held the 2nd Friday of every month at Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Tai Chi – Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-2 p.m. Take part in meditative movements while understanding the ancient Chinese discipline known as Tai Chi. Free. Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, 121 Shiloh Road.

Tai Chi Fan – Tuesdays through August 29 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Slow, gentle movements of Tai Chi combined with the beauty and grace of the Chinese bamboo fan. Participants will need a bamboo fan. Cost: $5. Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Southside Community Center, 285 Livingston Street.

It’s Zumba – Thursdays, 11 a.m. until 12 noon. Come join in for this fun Latin inspired exercise. Easy to follow. All levels are welcome. Free. Grove Street Community Center, 36 Grove Street.

Zumba Gold – Held Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. until 12 noon. Come work on your mobility while grooving and moving to the beat to burn off those calories. No pre-registration needed. Free. Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center, 121 Shiloh Road.

Zumba Gold – Wednesdays through August 30 from 12-12:45 p.m. Learn some new moves while listening to some great tunes. Free. Stephens-Lee Community Center, 30 George Washington Carver Ave.
