Take a Hike on Young’s Mountain Trail

By Wallace Bohanan –
Young’s Mountain Trail opened on April 21, 2021 after 10 years of planning and building.
I have enjoyed hiking the trails at Triple Falls near Brevard, Bear Wallow in Gerton, and Green Mountain in Hendersonville. This trail covers two-and-a-half miles from bottom to top and is very ecologically friendly.
“We wanted to build a trail that preserves the land it passes through,” said trail designer Peter Barr.
The trail has a gradual ascent for about a mile and steepens as it gets into the cliffs. The ascent at that point is aided by large rock steps that were put into place by volunteers. After about a half-mile of steep ascent, the trail passes some outcroppings that provide a spectacular view of Lake Lure and the surrounding countryside. From there the trail gradually flattens a bit and ends at the summit, offering more spectacular views. It’s then two-and-a-half miles back down to the trail-head.
The trail-head for Young’s Mountain Trail is within a gated community. According to Rose Jenkins Lane, Communications & Marketing Director for Conserving Carolina, “To access the trail-head, hikers need to register on our web site to get the access code for the day they will be hiking.” Parking is limited, so register early.
Although the trail is gradual in some sections, the steep sections have some drop-offs near the trail and require some dexterity to remain safe. This section is not for beginners or hikers with dexterity or balance issues.
