Reclaiming Our Spaces
Black Existence in the Public Sphere
On September 22, 2021 Dr. Goodwin led the “Reclaiming Our Spaces: Black Existence in the Public Sphere” webinar. She discussed how Black people navigate their presence in public spaces, with an emphasis on how Brown and other leading Black women in the 19th and 20th centuries resisted local and national efforts to marginalize the existence of Black women and instead created educational, historical, and political spaces for Black people.
Dr. Daleah Goodwin is a Professor of History and Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives at Warren Wilson College. Her research as a historian specializes in 19th and 20th century Black women’s history.
The webinar was hosted by Warren Wilson College. Founded in 1894, Warren Wilson College is a private liberal arts institution located in Asheville, North Carolina. Warren Wilson is the country’s only liberal arts college with a national student body and integrated work and service programs. In addition to its undergraduate program, it has an acclaimed MFA Program for Writers, the nation’s first low-residency graduate program in creative writing.
