Eat… Work… Pray

The Conscious Corner by Maceo Z. Keeling, Sr. –
Everybody wants to feel good, but only a few are willing to do what it takes!
I’m talking about enjoying good health and fitness. I’m talking about feeling good about your accomplishments and getting a good night’s sleep. I’m talking about spiritual wellness and enjoying peace of mind.
I believe that many of us know what to do and how to do it.
In this article, I’m asking you to ask yourself, what is stopping you from living your best life? This is near and dear to my heart because I have experienced a lot of these trials and triumphs.
Eat
It has been said many times over that we are what we eat.
I don’t completely agree with that statement. Many of us have bad eating habits but we are not bad people. We eat junk food but we ourselves are not junk. We often live to eat and in doing so we eat too much. I have asked older folks how they stay so young looking and able to get around? The answer is usually the same: exercise and diet!
The food we eat is intended to sustain life, so in fact we should be eating well to live well. If you put unhealthy food in your body it’s like putting water in your gas tank.
Perhaps a better analogy is sugar. Would you expect your car to run if you put sugar in the gas tank? Basically, I encourage you to consider a coach, mentor, or partner in health to help you stay focused on the goals for healthy living.
Work
We treat this four-letter word like it’s a four-letter word! Why do we have such contempt for work? Perhaps it is because many of our ancestors were forced to do it under threat of death. We sought ways to avoid the sting of the whip.
I’ll tell you, work is a good thing. Work is even a pleasant thing when you match what you like with how you get paid. My dad often said, “Lemme tell ya, if ya do whatcha love and can get paid for it…you’ll neva work a day in ya life!”
Work is magical. It can earn you money for sure, but it makes you different. When you put forth your effort and are compensated, that’s cool. But, when you do your best and leave nothing undone, there is a sense of personal satisfaction that makes the money pale in comparison. You become a star in your own play. Work is magical because it makes an average person feel good, and a person who feels good is better.
We often confuse the money with the achievement. The money is just the fringe benefit of pouring yourself into something bigger than you. I remember being teased for working at McDonald’s, but I have skills that have made me feel confident and secure, even when I don’t work every day, because I know that I can.
Pray
Do you believe in anything greater than yourself? We are like a fleeting vapor that comes and stays for a spell, and then we go away. Do you know what I’m talking about?
If you believe in a greater power, did you acknowledge it today?
I can’t tell you what to believe or how to have faith. I can tell you that I believe in a power that, for me, has no equal. It gives me solace in difficult times. When I am going in I know it will bring me out! I am covered and I feel peace. I feel power. I feel protected. I feel these things because I pray. I have neither prayed the perfect prayer, or prayed enough, but I pray.
I encourage each of you reading this to try prayer. Prayer opens your mind to possibilities that are greater than your abilities alone. It connects you to an igniter that sparks light in the midst of darkness. It fuels you when you are out of gas and spent. It makes you know when you are in doubt and heals when your heart aches.
For those of you who don’t believe me, I dare you! I double dare you!
