WNC affiliates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and All Souls Counseling Center (ASCC) are joining forces on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Carrier Park in Asheville for the 2nd Annual Mental Wellness Walk.
The Walk seeks to raise awareness of the importance of mental wellness and community resources that exist for people with mental health issues. The event, open to all supporters, will include a 5K Walk, music by Billingsley, refreshments, and resource displays.
NAMI and ASCC share the urgent goals of eliminating the stigma associated with mental illness and improving access to mental health treatment for everyone. As in most illnesses, early detection and proper treatment lead to better outcomes. NAMI WNC offers free support groups, educational opportunities, trainings, and literature. All Souls Counseling Center offers mental health counseling to uninsured and underinsured residents of western North Carolina.
NC Brookhaven Behavioral Health, one of Buncombe County’s three black-owned behavioral health providers, is a major financial sponsor for this year’s Walk. NC Brookhaven Behavioral Health, owned by Fred and Jackie Baker, offers accredited programs such as Assisted Family Living (AFL) and Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT).
Brookhaven is WNC’s only certified Disabled Veteran-owned business providing mental health services for veterans and civilians. Both the clientele and the staff of NC Brookhaven are racially diverse. Another black-owned mental health provider, Ona’s Place (Onas Perry, owner), was a major supporter of last year’s walk.
The Mental Health Walk will take place Saturday, May 19 at Carrier Park, rain or shine. Registration ($10) begins at 9 a.m. Walk begins at 10 a.m.
