Exalted Ruler Fredrick Horne Receives State Recognition

The North Carolina Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World has honored Brother Frederick Horne as the 2017 Elk of The Year.

Brother Horne serves as Exalted Ruler of Fawndale Lodge #363, where he has previously served as Tiler and Leading Knight. He is also a member of the Past Exalted Ruler Council #134, and has served as the Vice-Chief Antler. He is a member of Enloe Past State President Council #3 and currently serves as Special Deputy in the 8th District; he is also active in Civil Liberties and a member of the fire safety division. A trustee in the NC State Association, Brother Horne has been awarded Elk of the Year in 2000, 2002, and 2008.

Brother Horne, a native of Asheville, is the father of four children and has three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He graduated from Stephens-Lee High School (“The Castle on the Hill”) in 1954, and then attended Johnson C. Smith University. As a college student he was a renowned football player, and in 2008 he was inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Retired in 1980 after a career with the U.S. Air Force, Brother Horne is a member of Berry Temple United Methodist Church, a Life Member of the NAACP, AMVETS, YMCA, and of the Stephens-Lee Alumni Association, which he serves as membership chairperson and Sergeant at Arms. He is also a charter member of the Rites of Passage of Asheville, and a member of Johnson C. Smith Alumni Association; his particular hobbies are sports, anything that is logical, and, as he says, “talking smack!”

“Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.” That is Brother Frederick Horne’s motto, and it truly is the motto he lives by.
