Master Gardener School Gardening Grants Available

Asheville – The Extension Master Gardener Volunteers (EMGs) will award small grants for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year to schools in Asheville and Buncombe County. The grants, designed to establish Learning Gardens for students, vary in size with an average amount of $250.00.
Learning Gardens provide hands-on educational experiences that allow students to apply concepts in math, science, environmental education, and even art and literature, in practical settings.
Since 2007, the EMG program has donated more than $13,000 to 29 schools, helping more than 300 teachers and 4,500 students. Funds for the school grants are raised through EMG events, including the bi-annual garden tour and other events.
The mission of the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Buncombe County is to provide education and current research-based urban horticultural information through North Carolina Cooperative Extension programs and activities, while striving to improve and preserve our natural environment.
School Grants applications will be evaluated to determine how well the proposed program meets the Extension Master Gardeners mission. Selection criteria include the type of program for which the funds are sought, educational goals of the program, and number of students to benefit.
Application deadline is April 30. Details and applications may be found at the Buncombe County Extension website at www.buncombe.ces.ncsu.edu. For questions call the Extension Office at (828) 255-5522, or contact Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, Carolyn Mann, at [email protected].
