As part of the summer camp enrichment and life-skills program at the Dr. Wesley Grant, Sr. Center, youth participants of the summer camp program were introduced to the game of golf. Local community members and area golfers saw the need to introduce inner-city youth to the sport, and Asheville Parks and Recreation Director Roderick Simmons and Assistant Director of the Grant Center William Hoke, welcomed the implementation of this extracurricular activity.
A visit to the driving range is a great opportunity to exercise.
Billy Gardenheight, a local retired professional golfer said, “As more youngsters discover the fundamentals of golf, they will began to appreciate the qualities that golf can offer. What we are doing is cultivating their interest, and ideally one day they will discover the excitement of a day at the golf course. We plan to keep the golf program going for as long as the weather allows.”
Ultimately, parents and/or guardians are the catalyst to the growth of a child’s interest in golf. A visit to the driving range where you and your child can spend time together is an excellent way to get them started. Invite some of your child’s friends along so they can associate golf with fun. Don’t worry too much about instructing your child from the beginning; just make sure he or she get an opportunity to hit some balls, have fun, and enjoy the exercise!
