Steve Harvey’s Morning Show will replace Joyner’s long-running drive-time talk show.
For all you early morning commuters and faithful listeners, Clear Channel Chicago said it has pulled the plug on Tom Joyner’s “V103” syndicated morning show after 13 years.
Tom Joyner has deep roots in the radio industry. He began his radio career in the early 1970s at Johnson Publishing’s old WJPC (AM 950). A native of Tuskegee, Ala., and known as “The Hardest Working Man in Radio,” Joyner gained fame in the mid-1980s when he accepted simultaneous jobs as “morning drive man” at KKDA in Dallas, Texas, and “afternoon drive man” at Chicago’s WGCI. The double duty earned Joyner national fame and high ratings – and the nickname “Fly-jock” because of the daily Dallas-Chicago air commute.
“We’ve had great times in Chicago,” says Joyner. “We got where we
are by knowing who you are, what you want, and by super-serving our
audience, just like my mentor [Johnson Publishing founder] John H.
Johnson taught me to do. This world is changing, but doing the right
thing never does, and we will continue to do what we’ve always done for
the African-American community.”

Joyner wants his fans to know that, even though Clear Channel
has dropped the Tom Joyner Morning Show, his program will still be
available online. He points listeners who have followed him for decades
to www.BlackAmericaWeb.com, where they can continue to hear his “Party
With a Purpose.” “So this isn’t the end, it’s just a change,” mused
Joyner.
WVAZ-FM Program Director Derrick Brown says, “Tom Joyner has
been a great partner with V103 for the past 13 years, making it
difficult to part ways. We appreciate all Tom’s hard work and wish him
continued success.”
Speaking of the shift to Steve Harvey, a stand-up comedian and
TV star, Brown added, “I feel like V103 just won the lottery! Steve
Harvey is an entertainment and marketing juggernaut. There are very few
entertainers who have successfully tackled radio, TV, film, stage,
online and publishing. His unique life perspective and riveting content
fit V103 like a glove. Being a ‘King of Comedy,’ nobody can beat Steve
being funny, and I’m absolutely elated that he’s joining our team.”
