‘Tech genius’ image wears thin after series of errors calls DOGE competence into question.

Rachel Maddow looks at a series of unforced errors by Elon Musk and the DOGE team that calls into question the accuracy of their “tech genius” image and whether they have the competence to tinker with the systems that run the federal government.

Two web development experts discovered that doge.gov retrieves data from a database that third parties can access and modify, allowing unauthorized entries to appear live on the website. On Thursday, February 13, 2025, independent coders exploited the vulnerability, adding public messages such as “this is a joke of a .gov site” and “THESE ‘EXPERTS’ LEFT THEIR DATABASE OPEN -roro.”

The website was launched as part of Musk’s push for transparency in federal spending and workforce reductions. Another Musk-linked site, waste.gov, was also found to be unsecured earlier in the week, prompting officials to lock it down.
