Harriet Tubman Sculpture Arrives in Philadelphia

The sculpture was displayed in Bridge Park in downtown Sylva, NC, for four months before heading to Philadelphia.

Philadelphia unveiled the statue of Harriet Tubman on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, on the North Apron of City Hall just in time for Tubman’s 200th birthday.

Nine feet tall and bronze, “Harriet Tubman, The Journey to Freedom” was unveiled on the northwest corner of City Hall. The sculpture was displayed in Bridge Park in downtown Sylva, NC, for four months before heading to Philadelphia.

Wesley Wofford, a Cashiers resident and Academy and Emmy Award-winning sculptor, created the bronze statue in honor of Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery in Maryland and led African American enslaved people to freedom on the Underground Railroad.

“Journey to Freedom” will remain on view at City Hall until March 31, 2022. It depicts the last person she brought to freedom, a child she ultimately adopted.
