Lori Lightfoot

Chicago Elects First Black Female Mayor

Lori Lightfoot

Chicago, IL – Voters in Chicago recently elected former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot as their next mayor, making Chicago the largest city to elect an African American woman as its top elected official.

Lightfoot is also the first openly GLBT mayor of such a large city, and her win with 74% of the vote against an establishment candidate—Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle—reflected the strong anti-incumbent, anti-establishment mood in the city.

Lightfoot said that as mayor, she would focus on investing in neighborhoods on the West and South Sides of Chicago and bring transparency and accountability to city government, which is weighed down by a myriad of problems and $28 billion in unfunded pension obligations. Lightfoot said she also wants to end City Hall corruption and restore people’s faith in government.
