The City of Asheville has openings on several committees where you can make a difference and put your experience and knowledge to work for the community.

Current Vacancies

Board of Adjustment – (Alternate) Duties include, but are not limited to hearing and deciding: (1) applications for approval of variances from the terms of the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO); (2) appeals concerning provisions of the UDO; (3) appeals concerning the City’s Housing Code.

Board of Electrical Examiners – (Vacancy is for an Electrical Layman.)This board examines applicants for licenses for the transaction of other related business.

Citizens Police Advisory Committee – (Three vacancies for representative(s) from: the North District; Central District; and Housing Authority property resident.) Duties include: (1) serve as liaison between the police and community; (2) mediate problems or conflicts; (3) advocate for programs, ideas, and methods to improve the relationship between the police and the community; and (4) disseminate information to the community and to government officials.

Civic Center Commission – Duties include: (1) review and make recommendations on programming goals and objectives for each venue in the Civic Center; (2) establish a method for handling of customer service complaints; (3) develop and make recommendations regarding long-range plans for the Civic Center; (4) review and make recommendations on proposals for changes in the fees and charges for use of Civic Center facilities.

Homeless Initiative Advisory Committee – (Two vacancies: preference will be given to an individual with a demonstrated background in Veterans Administration for one of the vacancies.) Duties include: 1) serve as an advisory body, in collaboration with the Asheville-Buncombe Homeless Coalition, to the Asheville City Council or its designated subcommittee for the NC 501 Continuum of Care; 2) address homelessness through a coordinated community-based process of identifying needs and building a system of housing and services that meet those needs; 3) foster a community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness; 4) secure funding and make recommendations for quickly re-housing homeless individuals and families.

I-26 Connector Project Aesthetics Committee – Ad hoc committee, established to gather information and ideas about aesthetics to make the I-26 Connector project a cohesive and integrated part of Asheville. Estimated one-year duration.

Neighborhood Advisory Committee – Duties include: (1) develop a plan to strengthen neighborhood identity and resilience, and to facilitate communication and cooperation between Asheville’s neighborhoods and City offices; (2) develop benchmarks and standards; and (3) work on special projects that are consistent with the goals of the committee, as assigned or directed by Council.

Noise Ordinance Appeals Board – (Alternate) This Board will advise the City on matters related to noise and noise control, and will hear and decide appeals and complaints from citizens.

Planning & Zoning Commission – Duties include: (1) review of all new text for proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), and proposals to zone or change the zoning of all property regulated under the UDO and to make recommendations to City Council for final action thereon.

Tourism Development Authority – These seats (2) require an owner or operator of a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, or vacation rental management company with more than 100 rental units. Please indicate on your application. Further the development of travel, tourism, and conventions in the county through state, national and international advertising and promotion.

Tree Commission – Foster the preservation, planting, replacement and removal of trees without denying the reasonable use and enjoyment of real property.
