Urban News to Cover 2012 Democratic Convention
The Urban News will be covering the 2012 Democratic Convention in Charlotte September 3-6 with live reports posted on our website every day and evening.
With five journalists from the paper – including photojournalists and story editors – covering events at the Time Warner Cable Arena, the Urban News will bring our readers the latest news from the convention, covering such events as the unveiling of the party’s 2012 platform on which President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will run for re-election – along with Democrats farther down the ticket. We’ll cover keynote speeches by San Antonio (TX) Mayor Julian Castro, Massachusetts senate candidate and consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren, former President Bill Clinton, and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Johnnie Grant, owner and publisher of the Urban News, said, “It’s exciting that for the first time in anyone’s memory a national party convention is being held in North Carolina’s Queen City of Charlotte, and we’re very pleased that the convention planners awarded the Urban News five slots for our media team. We’re all anticipating long days and hard work but a very rewarding experience as we participate in and cover this historic event.”
Copy editor Moe White noted, “It’s hard to imagine the amount of planning that must go into an event like this. With all the national and international media there, from The New York Times and the TV networks to newspapers from Athens to Tokyo, it’s amazing that even a small but important community paper like the Urban News gets invited to report on the convention. So we’re very pleased and proud to be able to attend.”
Other coverage will be provided by Sharon Shervington, our regular book reviewer, who worked as a journalist with The New York Times and an editor for the international edition of the Wall Street Journal earlier in her career; and Renato Rotolo, the paper’s regular photographer.
Watch for our coverage beginning Monday, September 2 as we post our first stories, interviews, and reports from the Democratic National Convention on www.theurbannews.com.
