Staff Reports

The League of Women Voters of Asheville and Buncombe County will host candidates for Asheville City Council at a public Meet and Greet opportunity September 20 at Packs Tavern in downtown Asheville. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the upstairs Century Room from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Citizens will have a chance to talk with candidates about issues and campaign positions.

Nine candidates will face off in a nonpartisan primary election October 11; the six highest vote-getters in that election will vie for three seats on City Council (the League will host a forum for those six October 18). Two incumbents, Jan Davis and Bill Russell, are running for reelection; a third, Brownie Newman, is retiring after two terms. The other candidates are Mark Cates, Saul Chase, Lael Gray, Marc Hunt, Tim Peck, Chris Pelly, and T. J. Thomasson.
