Chief Justice Sarah Parker has appointed District Court Judge Calvin Hill as Chief District 28 Court Judge, effective January 1, 2011. In a memo to court officials Parker wrote, “Judge Hill has served ably as a District Court Judge, and I am confident that under Judge Hill’s leadership all the District Court Judges will continue to work diligently to ensure the fair and efficient administration in our courts.”
Appointed to the bench by Governor Mike Easley in 2006, Judge Hill is replacing Chief District Court Judge Gary Cash, who is retiring. Hill will work with six other District 28 court judges as the Chief Judge. In that role, he will govern the calendar of Civil and Criminal Cases, oversee the rotation of the District 28 Court Judges, and supervise magistrate services.
A graduate of North Carolina Central University’s School of Law, Hill
began to practice law at the firm of C.C. “Buddy” Malone in Durham,
N.C. His distinguished 28th District judicial career includes service as
an attorney in the Public Defenders Office, his appointment to the
bench in January 2007 by Easley, and, six months later, his elevation by
fellow attorneys as president-elect of the Bar Association for the 28th
District of the state of North Carolina.
A resident of Asheville for many years, Judge Hill is a native of
Cross Hill, South Carolina. He received an undergraduate degree in
social work from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Hill is
the father of two adult children, and relaxes by reading.
