City Encourages Preparedness at Start of Hurricane Season
Hurricane season officially begins June 1, and the City of Asheville encourages citizens are encouraged to assemble their disaster preparedness kits and update their emergency plans.
“Our state’s vulnerability to hurricanes ranks second only to Florida, so every citizen must be prepared,” said Easley. “If those who are able to prepare will do so, then police officers, firefighters and EMS crews will be able to help those in life threatening situations first.”
The following is a list of suggested items for a preparedness kit from Asheville Fire and Rescue:
• Non-perishable food for 3-5 days
• 1 gallon of water per person per day for 3-5 days
• Clothes and personal hygiene items
• Weather radio and batteries
• Bedding materials
• Money
• Identification card and insurance card
• Pet food and needed pet supplies
Families should
have an evacuation plan set up in case their area undergoes a suggested
or mandatory evacuation. Asheville Fire Chief Greg Grayson encouraged
citizens to get prepared before a storm warning or severe event comes
along.
“Hurricane
season is a great reminder that we all have personal responsibility for
our own safety and those depending upon us. It is important to make
sure you have an emergency supply kit and be prepared for whatever type
disaster that we may face,” said Grayson. “Time spent planning ahead of
an emergency will allow you to be able to remain calm and take
appropriate actions if an emergency occurs.”
