McDowell Hospital Offers Free Physicals for Young Athletes

Junior High and High School Athletes Encouraged to Attend to Meet Required Standard

MARION, N.C. (May 16, 2013) – McDowell Hospital is offering free physicals for junior high school and high school athletes on Thursday, May 23, at the McDowell High School gym. Students who plan to try out for any school-sponsored athletic team are required to have a physical before participation in school athletics.

Free exams will be offered to students from each of the schools at the following times:

·         McDowell High School students – 3:30 p.m.

·         West Junior High students – 4:30 p.m.

·         East Junior High students – 5:15 p.m.

“The physicians, nurses and staff at McDowell Hospital are very gracious to volunteer their time and provide physicals at no cost to the students. Any athlete who anticipates trying out for a sport is encouraged to take advantage of this free service,” Michelle Bruner, MSc, LAT, ATc, McDowell Hospital and Athletic Trainer at McDowell High School, said. “This is just one way that McDowell Hospital strives to meet the needs of the local community and fulfill Mission Health’s BIG(GER) Aim: to get each patient to the desired outcome, first without harm, also without waste and with an exceptional experience for the patient and family.”

Minors should be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bring a completed eligibility packet to the physical. Students should come dressed comfortably in shorts and a T-shirt, and bring glasses and contacts, if they use them. All students and volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. Physicals are required by the North Carolina school athletic associations.
