Sam Johnson of Leicester recently became Asheville Christian Academy’s first Division I men’s basketball scholarship player. The Winston-Salem State Rams made him an offer that he was unable to refuse.

“It’s a big opportunity,” Johnson said. “I’d rather play than be on the bench at a school that everybody’s heard of. Being a forerunner here at ACA is great, but I really believe that there are at least three other guys on our team who are going to get this chance.”

Johnson is a 6’8” senior and averaged 11.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and
2.5 blocks per game during his junior season. He is a three-year
starter for the ACA Lions and is a versatile player, effective as
either power forward or center. The Lions, a formidable opponent, are 9
and 4 this season with five returning starters.

The Johnsons have been a long-time Asheville Christian Academy
family and very involved with the basketball program. Josh Johnson (07)
led the Lions to the Carolinas Athletic Association tournament title in
2007 and now plays on Army’s junior varsity team. Lydia Johnson (07),
also on a CAA championship team, now plays for Charleston Southern.

“We’re obviously excited for Sam,” ACA coach Andy Ray said.
“He’s worked extra hard for this. Both in terms of academics and
basketball, this was the right choice for Sam.”

The Urban News congratulates Sam and his parents for his academic and athletic accomplishment.
