Our VOICE Events Recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month

survivor.jpgOur VOICE, the Buncombe County Rape Crisis and Prevention Center, is raising awareness during April – National Sexual Assault Awareness Month – with a variety of special events and ways for the community to become involved. Sexual assault affects one of four women and one of six men.

 

Our VOICE takes aim at common myths about rape and engages the
community, both women and men, throughout April to give solace to
victims who may be afraid to come forward and give voice to the
thousands who suffer in silence. April events include:

Saturday, April 14, 7 p.m.

Firestorm
Café – Victims and volunteers will read from Together We Are Strong,
which highlights the strength and journey of sexual assault survivors.

VA
Medical Center – The Clothesline Project brings awareness to the
epidemic of sexual assault in the military. Details: Lynn Marlow, (828)

Wednesday, April 18, 7 p.m.

Take Back the Night at
UNCA – a march through campus in solidarity with victims of sexual
violence hosted by Speak Up of UNCA. Highsmith Union, UNCA. Details:

City-County
Plaza – Crime Victims Memorial honoring, supporting, end empowering

Sunday, April 22, 12 noon-6 p.m.

Tattoo Fundraiser
with all proceeds from select tattoos to Our VOICE. Event takes place
at Freaks-n-Geeks Tattoo in West Asheville. Details: Ohia at (828)

Saturday, April 28

3rd Annual “Walk a Mile in Her
Shoes” – area men walk a mile through downtown Asheville in heels as
they stand in solidarity and denounce sexual violence against women.
City-County Plaza: 11 a.m. registration, 12 noon walk. Registration,
$10. Walkers (both men and women) are encouraged to get sponsored. Visit

Our VOICE offers a 24/7 crisis line
(828-255-7576) and hospital accompaniment for individuals who have
experienced sexual assault. Case management, individual, and group
counseling is also available to survivors and their families at no cost.
Additional programs such as Bar Outreach, Climbing Towards Confidence,
Sexual Harassment Prevention Education, HeartWorks Healing Arts, and
Kelly’s Line (Sex Worker Outreach Program) are also offered.
