Downtown Asheville– Fourth of July Celebration from 4-10 p.m. Martin Luther King Park, Asheville. Shindig on the Green preview at 7:30-9:30. Entertainment for children, music, and food vendors. West Asheville – Freedomfest, 1 p.m. Saturday, outside the Rocket Club, 401 Haywood Rd. Day portion is free, music moves inside the Rocket Club at 7 p.m., $12.

Leicester – July Fourth Festival, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Leicester Community Center, 2979 Leicester Highway. Choir, cloggers, playground, music all day. Picnic supper $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Bring lawn chairs. No fireworks. Details at 683-9075, www.leicesternc.com
