Annual International Day of Peace

by Rachael Bliss

Western North Carolina peace activists plan to display the sweetness of what a world without a constant state of war would look like when they congregate on Friday, September 21 at Pack Square in downtown Asheville.

Scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., this year’s event will offer free entertainment from local performers, such as pianist Richard Shulman, Harvest Moon String Band, singer/songwriter Kitty K, Geri Littlejohn on her self-made flutes, Will Hel Makay, singer Rhoda Weaver, drummer and vocalist Xavier Hawk, and special youth performances from the Evergreen Community Charter School seventh grade, as well as the Youth Division of SGI-USA Buddhist Association.

This event is open and free to the public. Participants are asked to bring a bell or similiar instrument to ring in unison with city bells at 4:15 p.m. in honor of this sacred day. In case of rain, an abbreviated version of the event will be moved to the nearby First Congregational United Church of Christ, 20 Oak Street in Asheville.
