3rd Annual BBQ Tailgate Dinner

Benefit for the Asheville High School Band

Staff reports

Under the tutelage of Asheville High School Band Director William Talley III, the award-winning AHS band has been invited to perform at the Presidential Inaugural Festival in January 2012. It is one of few bands from across the country to receive such a prestigious invitation. Last fall the Cougar Marching Band received numerous awards in its fourth year of competition, and last March the Wind Symphony received its 44th consecutive “Superior” rating at the NC Music Performance Adjudication.

The band has scheduled a series of events to raise a total of $85,000 to pay for bus transportation, hotel rooms, food, and other expenses for the 115 band members, two directors, one principal, and 12 chaperones.

The first major event is the AHS band’s Third Annual Tailgate BBQ on Sept., 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Asheville High School cafeteria. Luella’s BBQ Restaurant, located at 501 Merrimon Ave., is sponsoring the Bar-B-Que and will present the band with a gift during the event to go towards the trip. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

The band’s biggest fundraising event will be the BandAid 5k Walk/Run/March November 10 at Carrier Park on Amboy Road. The cost per adult runner is $25; there will also be a youth run for children 10 and under for $10.
