League of Women Voters Asheville-Buncombe County Announces Scholarship

$1,000 scholarship offered to aid students attending the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

The League of Women Voters Asheville-Buncombe County has joined the University of North Carolina at Asheville Foundation to establish a $1,000 scholarship for each of the next five years to aid students attending UNCA.

The Foundation will work to ensure the Office of Financial Aid selects scholarship recipients based on the League’s requirement that funds go to a student who has financial need. The award is titled the League of Women Voters Asheville-Buncombe County Florence Ryan Scholarship. Membership in the Asheville-Buncombe League will also be provided.

The League’s Florence Ryan Education Fund, a charitable 501(c)(3) organization, is funding the scholarship and supports the League’s various educational activities. It is named for Florence Ryan, an early women’s suffrage advocate and activist. She moved to Asheville in 1926 and in 1947 was a founding member of the Asheville-Buncombe League.

The League of Women Voters is a 105-year-old organization with the mission of empowering voters and defending democracy. Its roots are in the suffragist movement and the name is not entirely descriptive.

The League focuses on voter registration, education, and outreach; civic education; monitoring Boards of Elections; the election of the president by popular vote; the Equal Rights Amendment; gender equity, and reproductive choice.
