Hart Merit Scholarship
Hart Funeral Service is offering a $1,000 scholarship for high school graduates.

The late Darryl J. Hart, who died in July 2021, emphasized the importance of empowering the next generation.
To continue his legacy, Hart Funeral Service is offering a $1,000 scholarship.
Darryl was well known in the Asheville community for his business and civic activities as well as his warm, generous spirit. He was a graduate of Carolina Day School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service, and was a life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
Eligibility requirements for the Darryl J. Hart Merit Scholarship
- Must be a current high school graduate and attend Asheville City Schools or Buncombe County Schools.
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (unweighted).
- Must submit an “official transcript” (in a sealed envelope).
- Must have proof of acceptance into a 2- or 4-year post-secondary institution(s).
- Must have two sealed letters of recommendation from one of these type of sources: teacher, pastor, employer, or a coach. Letter may not be written by a relative.
- Must submit an essay of 500 words that must discuss themselves, their plans for the future, and how they have demonstrated leadership, integrity, and community service.

Completed packets may be dropped off or sent by US mail to Hart Funeral Service, 60 Phifer Street, Asheville, NC 28801; or by email to [email protected]. Please put “Scholarship Packet” in the subject line of email, or on the envelope of mailed packet.
The deadline for application submission is 4 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2022. Late or incomplete application will not be accepted.
All completed packets will be reviewed by our committee of volunteers, and winners will be announced by May 16, 2022.
